 Reading Hall of Fame!

Dear Elementary School Parents,

I am pleased to announce another year of Salem School’s Reading Hall of Fame program.  This is an opportunity for students in Pre-school through Grade 4 to demonstrate their reading abilities and help us promote the joy of reading!

The goal of the project is to have your child read quality literature, throughout the school year, for pleasure.  It’s not a race to finish first, but an incentive to read all year long!

In order for your student to become a member of Reading Hall of Fame, he or she must fulfill certain requirements based on their grade level.  Students will read award winning books, poems, fiction and non-fiction, magazine articles and more.  The requirements are different for each grade level and may be modified if necessary.  Lists of award winning books are available at your school and town library and on our website, please click HERE to view.

Since this award must be earned mostly at home, we encourage parents and children to talk over the requirements.  Developing a plan together, to complete the requirements by the end of April, is a great organizational skill for your child.  Once the student has finished all the required reading and completed the biographical information, the student’s picture will be displayed in the Reading Hall of Fame Gallery in the school lobby.  Students should bring their completed form to their homeroom teacher for further instructions. Thanks to the generosity of the Salem School PTO, all students completing the program will receive a gift certificate that may be used towards a book at the spring book fair.

The program runs from now through April 26, 2013.  Make it last, read all school-year long!

In the spring, students in grade 3 & 4 will have the opportunity to design a Reading Hall of Fame Logo for the 2013-14 school year.  Our very first student logo is pictured below!

Look in your Wednesday folder for tips and news about reading, reading research, and encouraging students to be lifelong readers.  I’m excited about the new year, and hope that ALL students become members of Reading Hall of Fame.  If you have questions, please contact me.  Have fun reading!

Yours in reading,
